# Virtual Machines: Versatile Platforms for Systems and Processes

Morgan Kaufmann (2005). A taxonomy of virtualization that covers both process VMs (JVM, .NET CLR, dynamic binary translators) and system VMs (VMware, Xen). Predates Linux KVM but the architecture chapters are still the cleanest separation of concerns in the literature — ISA-level vs OS-level vs application-level virtualization, why each exists. On the [[eatonphil-bookclub]] speculative future list.
