A high-friction commons is a knowledge space built on purpose to be harder to enter and use, on the theory that the friction is what keeps it good. It inverts the usual goals of a consumer platform. Where mainstream products chase frictionlessness, a low barrier to entry, and scale, a high-friction commons treats all three as the thing that let the space get polluted, and trades them away for good-faith participation and spam resistance. The framing comes from build-a-new-internet, whose closing line is the whole idea in miniature: "Some things are more important than frictionlessness and a sleek UI."

The reasoning

The observation underneath is that the qualities that made the open internet great โ€” democratized access and contribution, a low barrier to entry, ease of use โ€” are precisely the qualities that made it trivially easy to pollute. Open the doors wide enough and anyone with a profit motive walks in; a marketer replicating inside an open host is just doing what marketers do. So instead of trying to keep bad actors out of a frictionless space (which the source treats as hopeless), you raise the cost of entry until the space self-selects for the people you want.

The early internet is the existence proof. Its high technical barrier selected for people whose curiosity outran their commercial ambition, back before the general public realized how much money computers held. Friction did the filtering that moderation now fails to do at scale.

What it requires

Two design commitments carry the model. First, never treat the commons as a market โ€” never let it be seen as another resource to extract and resell. Second, shift the incentive of participation toward something altruistic, optimizing for integrity rather than engagement or any other exploitable metric. Both cut against ordinary product instincts, which is why the source is frank that it might be impossible.

The reference points are deliberately old and slow: the Talmud, with centuries of preserved commentary and debate; the Buddhist sutras, spanning hundreds of years of contradiction and collaboration; the scientific literature in conversation with itself; and, as modern approximations, Wikipedia and the better parts of Hacker News, which stay clean because participants treat them as somewhat sacred. What they share is no ads, human authorship, and good-faith study.

The explicit tradeoff is scale. This is a design for a non-median user โ€” someone who values thoughtfulness and community over money or popularity โ€” so the resulting network is necessarily small. The median user keeps using Google, and that's accepted rather than fought.

Relation to other pages
