The concept
Instead of managing email in an app, print the messages. Check boxes by hand, write meeting dates in the margins, cross things out. Scan the marked-up pages. AI transcribes your decisions and executes them as if you'd clicked through the interface yourself.
Somers tested this by uploading a handwritten blog draft to ChatGPT. Near-perfect transcription. The technical barrier is gone.
Why physical media works better
Spatial organization. Pre-digital project work used entire rooms. Chapter outlines pinned to walls. Book stacks in meaningful piles on the floor. Location became cognitive scaffold โ you remembered where things were by where they physically sat. A wall-sized calendar shows the whole year at once, in a form everyone in the household can see and annotate.
Richer affordances. Software gives you a grid of pixels and a tiny vocabulary of interactions. Physical objects can be stacked, cut, taped, folded, arranged in space, drawn on, pinned up. Note cards spread across a table offer flexibility that no outliner matches.
Specialization. A paper calendar is just a calendar. It doesn't have notifications. It's not bundled with your email or social feed. Physical tools do one thing, which makes them easier to use for that one thing without distraction.
The problem with screens
Digital devices bundle functions. Your calendar comes with the same device that has your messages, news, social feeds. Opening the calendar means exposing yourself to everything else. The result is "multi-tasking freneticism" โ you meant to check your schedule and now you're scrolling.
The screen also collapses space. Everything happens in the same rectangle. There's no "where" to anchor memory. The chapter outline isn't on the wall; it's in a tab you might not find again.
Single-purpose modes
If we can't abandon screens entirely, we can at least unbundle them. Somers proposes OS-level modes:
- Lookup mode โ Ask a question, get an answer. Nothing else on screen. No browsing, no "while I'm here."
- Writing mode โ Editor only. No browser, no notifications, no escape.
- Research mode โ Browser and notes, but no email, no chat.
Each mode inaccessible to distractions by design. The mode itself enforces the specialization that physical tools have naturally.
The vision
The paper computer isn't anti-technology. It's pro-physicality with AI as the bridge. Write by hand because it's slower and more thoughtful. Let the machine handle the tedious part โ transcription, filing, sending. Keep the benefits of digital (search, backup, sharing) without the costs (distraction, disembodiment, tiny affordances).
Read, write, communicate, create โ and hardly ever see or touch a screen.
