CEO of openai. Born 1985, grew up in Clayton, Missouri. Stanford dropout. Married to Oliver Mulherin (2023), one son via surrogate.

Career path: Loopt (founded at Y Combinator's first batch, 2005; acquired 2012) โ†’ Y Combinator president (2014-2019, departed under pressure from partners) โ†’ OpenAI CEO (2019-present, briefly fired Nov 2023, reinstated within 5 days).

Co-founded OpenAI as a nonprofit in 2015 with Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, and Greg Brockman. Drove the conversion to capped-profit and then full for-profit. Personal investor in ~400 companies. Currently has no direct equity in OpenAI but this may change; indirect stake through a YC fund.

The most detailed public accounting of his leadership style comes from the altman-new-yorker-profile (Farrow & Marantz, 2026), which documents allegations of deception from colleagues at every organization he's led, alongside his extraordinary ability to mobilize allies and capital.

Key relationships: close ally of Brian Chesky and Ron Conway; "dear personal friend" of UAE's Sheikh Tahnoon; speaks with Trump "a few times a year"; strained relationship with Microsoft despite Nadella's long loyalty; bitter rivalry with Elon Musk (xAI founder, ongoing lawsuit).

Documented deceptions

A recurring pattern across the altman-new-yorker-profile, drawn from the Ilya Memos, the Amodei documents, board depositions, and reporter interviews.

The merge-and-assist clause โ€” Amodei negotiated this into OpenAI's charter: if another lab built safe AGI first, OpenAI would stand down and help them. During the 2019 Microsoft deal, a provision was quietly added giving Microsoft veto power over any mergers โ€” effectively killing the clause. When Amodei confronted Altman, Altman denied the provision existed. Amodei read it aloud from the contract. Altman continued denying it until a third colleague confirmed it to his face.

The Amodei "coup" accusation โ€” Altman summoned Dario and Daniela Amodei to tell them a senior executive had reported they were plotting a coup. Daniela brought the executive into the room; the executive denied saying anything. Altman then denied having made the claim. "I didn't even say that." Daniela: "You just said that."

GPT-4 safety approvals โ€” In a December 2022 board meeting, Altman assured directors that controversial GPT-4 features (fine-tuning, personal assistant mode) had been approved by a safety panel. Board member Helen Toner requested documentation and discovered neither feature had been approved.

The India release โ€” Microsoft released an early ChatGPT version in India without completing a required safety review. Altman briefed the board for many hours during this period and never mentioned it. A board member learned about it from an employee who pulled her aside after a meeting.

GPT-4 Turbo safety sign-off โ€” Altman told CTO Mira Murati that GPT-4 Turbo didn't need safety approval, citing general counsel Jason Kwon. When Murati asked Kwon directly over Slack, Kwon replied: "ugh... confused where sam got that impression."

The superalignment compute โ€” OpenAI publicly pledged "20% of the compute we've secured to date" for the superalignment team. Four people who worked on or closely with the team said actual resources were 1-2%, mostly on the oldest cluster with the worst chips. When Jan Leike complained, Murati told him to stop pressing โ€” the commitment had never been realistic.

China's "AGI Manhattan Project" โ€” In meetings with US intelligence officials starting in 2017, Altman claimed China had launched an "AGI Manhattan Project" and that OpenAI needed billions in government funding to keep pace. When pressed for evidence: "I've heard things." He promised to follow up with proof and never did. An intelligence official investigated and found no evidence the project existed: "It was just being used as a sales pitch."

Congressional testimony on equity โ€” Asked if he made "a lot of money," Altman told Congress: "I have no equity in OpenAI... I'm doing this because I love it." Technically true but misleading given his indirect equity through a YC fund. Multiple people indicated direct equity was coming. Brockman's stake is worth ~$20B.

Y Combinator departure โ€” Altman has maintained publicly and in depositions that he was never fired from YC. Paul Graham has tweeted supporting language. But privately, Graham told YC colleagues that "Sam had been lying to us all the time" and that Altman was removed. Blog posts about his role were quietly edited multiple times. An SEC filing listed him as chairman as late as 2021, which he says he wasn't aware of.

The Ping-Pong claim โ€” At Loopt, Altman bragged widely about being a champion Ping-Pong player โ€” "like, Missouri high-school Ping-Pong champ" โ€” then proved to be one of the worst players in the office. Minor, but the earliest documented instance of the pattern. A senior employee compared his blurring of aspiration and accomplishment to Theranos.

The board confrontation โ€” After his firing, the board pressed Altman to acknowledge a pattern of deception. He repeatedly said "This is just so fucked up. I can't change my personality." A board member's interpretation: "What it meant was 'I have this trait where I lie to people, and I'm not going to stop.'"
