What's real, what's staged

The images are genuine facilities, not sets, but the gallery is a low-quality repost of a repost β€” JPEG artifacts give it away. These rooms aren't really "vintage" in Russia: combined heat and power plants still run near-identical panels today, some seen fully functional as recently as 2010 with no modernization planned. Several photos already show modern monitors bolted onto the old consoles. The chef-style caps on some operators drew skepticism about whether the shots were dressed up for the camera.

Is the look Soviet or just old?

Two positions in the thread. One: any pre-computer control room looks like this β€” French nuclear plants (Bugey, Dampierre), Sweden's Γ…gesta, subway and grid rooms across the West. Two: there is a deliberate Soviet/Russian sensibility, specifically the seafoam/teal green backgrounds, chosen to keep the environment calm under stress. Seafoam green recurs across mid-century control rooms in general (the "Go Away Green" idea), so the color itself isn't uniquely Soviet β€” it was cheap, low-glare, and easy on the eyes across long shifts.

The engineering behind the panels

The physical layout followed real constraints. Rooms were large and operators walked between panels because banks of incandescent lamps threw off heat, and the wiring behind each console needed clearance for installation and servicing. Lighting was engineered: one former reactor operator described a fully fluorescent ceiling under a softbox-style grid, wired one-third of lamps per phase of three-phase mains to eliminate flicker β€” bright, shadowless, better than modern office light.

Color-coding served fast action under pressure, but the "hit the red button" image is a myth. A French nuclear operator noted there are too many red buttons for that; operators train for years and use specific procedural callouts instead. Vintage nuclear rooms are also the standard teaching example of bad UI β€” Three Mile Island partly happened because operators couldn't pick the right indicator out of a sea of lights. Plants were later retrofitted and the crisis-information process rethought.
