A photo essay collecting vintage control rooms from the Soviet era β€” panels of large buttons and analog dials, built before computers and screens took over. The post is a gallery with almost no text.

Roughly 20 photographs of green and grey consoles, incandescent indicator lamps, and operators in white coats (some wearing chef-style caps). Several photos show modern computer monitors bolted onto the old panels, meaning some of these rooms were still in use recently.

Is the look Soviet-specific or just old? One camp argues any pre-computer control room looks like this β€” French nuclear plants from the 1970s (Bugey, Dampierre), Sweden's Γ…gesta plant, subway and grid control rooms across the West. The counter-argument: there is a deliberate Soviet/Russian design sensibility, notably the seafoam/teal green backgrounds chosen because they create a calmer environment under stress. The public ISS telemetry mimic page reportedly switches to a bluish scheme on its Russian version, matching interiors the Russians use elsewhere.

Why the color? Seafoam green recurs across mid-century control rooms generally, not just Soviet ones (see the referenced "Why So Many Control Rooms Were Seafoam Green" essay and the "Go Away Green" concept). Green/grey was cheap, low-glare, and easy on the eyes during long shifts.

Why so much floor space and walking? Old rooms had operators walking between panels; modern ones keep them seated. Reasons given: heat dissipation from banks of incandescent lamps, and clearance for installing and servicing the wiring behind each panel. The wiring was enormous β€” every input and output was a physical thing.

Color-coding and the "red button" myth. Aviation and nuclear panels use color so operators can act fast under pressure. But an actual French nuclear operator pushed back: you never hear "press the red button" β€” there are too many red buttons. Operators train for two years, know the machine by heart, and communicate specific, procedural callouts ("isolate vapor generator number 3", "bypassing turbine through GCTA, moving to step 342.B.3"). The calm, choreographed communication mirrors what surgeons say about real operating rooms versus TV drama.

Bad UI lineage. Vintage nuclear control rooms are the canonical teaching example of bad UI. Three Mile Island partly happened because operators couldn't pick the right indicator out of a sea of lights and alarms. Norman's The Design of Everyday Things has a photo of beer-tap handles fitted to control levers to differentiate them. Post-TMI, plants were retrofitted and the crisis-information process was rethought.

Lighting. A former reactor operator described the control room lighting as bright, shadowless, and flicker-free: the entire ceiling was fluorescent tubes under a grid (like a photographer's softbox grid), wired one-third of lamps per phase of three-phase mains to kill flicker. Better than modern office lighting.

SCADA / observability angle. Someone who worked on SCADA software noted the density of information when every I/O is physical, and how control rooms coalesced into fewer operators facing more data on screens. A separate comment argued these physical panels were better than modern software observability in some ways: they modeled the system (not individual service statuses), supported causal reasoning by showing control flow, surfaced state first rather than time-series graphs, and prioritized the first-out indicator (the first alarm in a cascade is usually the important one; the rest are downstream noise). Reading list offered for the topic: SCADA, ANSI/ISA-18.2-2016 (alarm management), NASA "Power of Ten" safe coding, Poka-Yoke, Kaizen/5S, and Fuben-eki (the benefits of inconvenience).

Provenance caveat. The gallery is a repost of a repost β€” JPEG artifacts and resizing give it away. Most originals came from blogger press tours of Russian facilities (e.g. Lana Sator's photography). These rooms are not really "vintage" in Russia; combined heat and power plants still run near-identical panels with barely a computer screen, some seen fully functional as recently as 2010 with no modernization planned.

Aesthetics split. Comments range from "gorgeous" and "form follows function" to "oppressive and bleak" and "looks fiddly". The chef hats drew mockery (McDonald's University, short-order cooks).
